A writer belonging to the Spanish "Generation of '98". For Barroja, who shared the same pessimistic view as the "Generation of '98", society was corrupt and the only means of salvation was through struggle and action. As such, he wrote works that placed more emphasis on action than on the analysis of people's inner lives, and works such as "Memoirs of an Activist" and "Sara Cain, the Adventurer" are typical examples. Other notable works include the autobiographical "The Tree of Knowledge" and "The Quest", which depicts the lower classes of Madrid.

スペインの〈98年世代〉に属する作家。〈98年世代〉に共通する悲観論の持主であったバローハにとって社会は腐敗しており，救済の唯一の手段は闘いであり行動であった。従って人間の内面分析よりも行動に重点を置いた作品を書いたが，《ある活動家の回想記》や《冒険児サラカイン》がその典型である。他に自伝的な《知恵の木》やマドリードの下層民を描いた《探求》などが代表作。
