A shrine located in Port Arthur, Liaoning Province, China. After the Russo-Japanese War, Japan leased the Liaodong Peninsula and called it the Kwantung Leased Territory. As Japanese people immigrated to the Kwantung Leased Territory, shrines such as Sekisui Shrine and Dairen Shrine were built, but in 1938 the government decided to build Kanto Shrine in Port Arthur, where the Kwantung Government Office and Kwantung Army Headquarters were located and which was also the base of the Navy, as a shrine to protect the Kwantung Leased Territory. Like the Korean Shrine, Kanto Shrine enshrines Amaterasu Omikami and Emperor Meiji, and is ranked as a government-sponsored shrine. However, construction took time, and the enshrinement ceremony was finally held on October 1, 1944. Source: Heibonsha World Encyclopedia, 2nd Edition Information |
