… In the second half of the 18th century, Stanisław August, who had acquired the ideas of the French Enlightenment, invited Italian and French artists such as B. Bellotto to Warsaw, and the Łazienki Palace and other buildings were remodeled in a neoclassical style. Piotr Michałowski (1800-55), a painter associated with French romanticism, especially J.T. Géricault, painted the expressions of farmers and horses with a dynamic and fresh brushstroke. Later, Warsaw produced landscape painters who had studied the French Barbizon School, while A. Grottger and J. Matejko were descended from the lineage of Vienna and Munich history painters. As an extension of this, at the end of the 19th century, a movement called "Young Poland" was born, featuring artists such as Wispiánski, who left behind pastel paintings characterized by expressive lines, and Jacek Malczewski (1854-1929), a symbolist who painted the interplay of fantasy and reality. …
