This concept was given by P. Schröder (1920) and K. Kleist (1901) to mental disorders that periodically or episodically show acute mental confusion and hallucinations/delusions. It was based on the idea of alteration theory, or "degradation of the mind and body," originating from the French BA Morel and V. Magnan. Although this diagnostic name is rarely used today, what are called atypical psychosis and schizoaffective psychosis are groups of disorders that share roughly the same clinical characteristics.
