[Died] January 22, 1994. Paris. French actor and director. He moved to Paris to become a painter, but from 1931 he studied at C. Durand's Atelier Theatre. After avant-garde studies such as "Les le mammaires," he joined the Comédie-Française in 1940, and directed and performed in P. Claudel's "Satin Slippers" (1943). In 1946, he and his wife Renaud formed their own theater company based at the Marigny Theatre, and as a leading figure in French theater, he presented a wide range of plays from classics to modern plays, such as "Hamlet" and F. Kafka's "The Trial." He was also known as a mime actor, and appeared in many films, including "Les Enfants d'Arte" (1945). In 1959, he became the first director of the Théâtre de France, and achieved success with E. Ionesco's "Rhino" (1960), but lost his position in 1968 after the "May Crisis" (→Odeon Theatre). Afterwards, it staged Rabelais (68) in a former wrestling hall in Montmartre, and P. Claudel's Beneath the Balearic Wind (72) in a theatre converted from the former Gare D'Orsay station, before acquiring a new theatre in a former skating rink on the Champs-Élysées in 1980.

[Died] August 6, 1873, Seine-et-Oise, Bougival. French politician. During the Restoration, he supported Louis Philippe as a constitutionalist. In the July Monarchy's parliament, he was a member of the royalist left and was one of the organizers of the Reformation Banquets of 1846-47. He was appointed Prime Minister by Louis Napoleon (Napoleon III) (1848-49), but left politics in opposition to the coup. After the collapse of the Second Empire, he was appointed Counsellor of State to the Council of State by L. Thiers (72).

Barrow, Errol Walton

Born: January 21, 1920, Barbados
Died: June 1, 1987, Bridgetown. Barbadian politician. Graduated from Harrison University and London University. After working as a lawyer, he was elected to the Parliament of the British colony of Barbados in 1949. He participated in the founding of the Democratic Labour Party in 1955 and served as its leader from 1958 to 1976. He became Prime Minister of the self-governing government in 1961, and after independence was achieved, he was re-elected in the general election in December 1966, becoming the first Prime Minister. He was re-elected for a third term in 1971 and led the government until 1976, when he returned to power in 1986, but died while in office.

[Died] May 4, 1677, London. British mathematician. Studied literature, science, and philosophy at Cambridge University. In 1662 he became professor of geometry at Gresham College, London, and in 1663 he became the newly established Lucasian Professor of Mathematics at Cambridge. In 1669 he resigned to become a chaplain in London, and was succeeded by Newton. As Lucasian Professor, he lectured on the foundations of mathematics, infinitesimal analysis, and optics. His lectures on optics are said to have influenced Newton.

フランスの政治家。王政復古期に立憲君主派としてルイ・フィリップを支持。七月王政の議会では王朝的左翼として 1846~47年の改革宴会の組織者の一人となった。ルイ・ナポレオン (ナポレオン3世) によって首相に任命された (1848~49) が,そのクーデターに反対して政界を去った。第二帝政崩壊後 L.ティエールによって国事院の国務参事官に任命された (72) 。

バルバドスの政治家。ハリソン,ロンドン両大学卒業。弁護士を経て,1949年イギリス領バルバドスの議会議員に当選。 55年民主労働党の結成に参加し,58~76年同党党首。 61年自治政府の首相となり,独立達成後 66年 12月の総選挙で再選され,初代首相となった。 71年3選され,76年まで政権を担当し,さらに 86年政権に返り咲いたが,在職中に死亡した。

イギリスの数学者。ケンブリッジ大学で文学,科学,哲学を学ぶ。 1662年ロンドンのグレシャム・カレッジ幾何学教授,63年からケンブリッジに新設されたルーカス数学教授。 69年ロンドンの勅任牧師となるため辞任,ニュートンが跡を継いだ。ルーカス教授として,数学の基礎,無限小解析,光学について講義を行う。光学の講義はニュートンに影響を与えたといわれる。
