Sonatine - sonatina (English spelling) Italian

Sonatine - sonatina (English spelling) Italian

A musical term. A contraction of sonata, commonly used in Japan for sonatina and zonatine. Examples of this usage can be seen as early as the 17th century, but in its modern sense it began to be used around the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries. Even as sonatas themselves became larger, small sonatas continued to be written, and this term began to appear as the title of a piece, implying that it was not for professionals, but was easy to play for enthusiasts and beginners. Sonatinas for piano by Friedrich Kuhlau (1786-1832) and Muzio Clementi (1752-1832) are known as exercises for beginners. This term is used overwhelmingly in works for piano, and although it is sometimes seen in works with piano and violin arrangements, it is rarely used in other arrangements. In addition, small sonatas from the period before the term was popularized may also be called this term.
