Italian composer. One of the most representative composers of the late Renaissance. His real name was Giovanni Pierluigi. He is said to have been born in Palestrina near Rome, hence the name Palestrina, but there is also a theory that he was born in Rome. After working as a choirboy and organist, he became conductor of the Julia Chapel at St. Peter's Basilica in Rome in 1551. He lived in Rome thereafter and published his first collection of songs, "Mass I", in 1554. With the death of his patron Pope Julius III, he left the papacy and served as conductor of the Church of San Giovanni in Laterano from 1555 to 1560 and of the Church of Santa Maria Maggiore from 1561 to 1566. In 1571, he returned to his previous position at St. Peter's Basilica, later receiving the title of Papal Chapel Composer, and continued to work under the Pope until his death. His works include over 100 masses, including the famous "Mass of Pope Marcellus," nearly 400 motets, including "Stabat Mater," and secular madrigals. He is said to be the greatest Catholic composer, perfecting the harmonious contrapuntal style by combining the techniques of the Flemish school with an Italian sensibility. → A cappella / Victoria / Lassus → Related topics Christian music | Gounod | Stabat Mater | Pfitzner | Requiem Source : Heibonsha Encyclopedia About MyPedia Information |
