The first Greek filmmaker to gain international acclaim was probably Michael Cacoyannis, who first studied theater and film in England before returning to Greece to begin producing. In 1955 he made Stella starring Melina Mercouri, who had been a stage actress until then, and in 1961 his film Elektra won the Best Technical Award at the Cannes Film Festival, with Irene Papas in the lead role. He went on to make Zorba the Neighbor (1965) with Anthony Quinn and The Fish Comes Out (1967) with Candice Bergen, but his style gradually became detached from the realities of Greece, and, partly because of his reliance on Hollywood capital, some criticized his films as nothing more than tourist films.
