An old city in the west of Fukuoka Prefecture. It was incorporated as a city in 1992. It occupies the lowlands from the northern slope of the Sefuri Mountains to the base of the Itoshima Peninsula, and the main settlements developed as old post towns and market towns. The Chikuhi Line and Fukuoka-Maebaru Road pass through the area. Rice, vegetables, mandarin oranges, and chrysanthemums are cultivated here, and seaweed is also cultivated. In recent years, the number of people commuting to Fukuoka City has increased. It is said to be the site of Ito Province, which is mentioned in the Gishiwajinden, and there are many ruins such as the Shido Dolmen Group, Ito Castle Ruins, and Raizan Kogoishi (all historical sites). It is home to the Ito Province History Museum. On Mt. Hagane, on the southwestern prefectural border, is the Haganeyama Standard Radio Wave Transmitter Station for radio-controlled clocks. 福岡県西部の旧市。1992年市制。脊振(せふり)山地北斜面から糸島半島基部の低地を占め,主集落は旧宿場町,市場町として発達,筑肥線,福岡前原道路が通じる。米作,野菜・ミカン・キク栽培が盛んで,ノリ養殖も行われる。近年は福岡市への通勤者が増加。《魏志倭人伝》にある伊都国があった地とされ,志登支石墓群,怡土(いと)城跡,雷山神籠(こうご)石(いずれも史跡)など遺跡が多い。伊都国歴史博物館がある。南西部県境の羽金山には電波時計へのはがね山標準電波送信所がある。2010年1月糸島郡二丈町,志摩町と合併,糸島市となる。104.50km2。6万7275人(2005)。
