The Encyclopedists. Contributors to the Encyclopédie, published in France from 1751, whose editors were Diderot and d'Alembert. The contributors were diverse, but they were generally united in their opposition to the Catholic Church and absolute monarchy. This was a comprehensive reflection of the capitalist transformation of France in the second half of the 18th century, and is significant in that they mobilized all the progressive ideas of the time, including the Enlightenment, providing ideological weapons and paving the way for the French Revolution in 1789.
