The British teachers' union, the National Union of Teachers (NUT), was initially organized in 1870 as a trade union, but after World War I it expanded and influenced education policy, aiming to improve the unity and status of teachers and to improve the education system. The German teachers' union, Deutsche Lehrerverein, formed in 1871, also shed its initial trade union character after the Weimar Revolution and engaged in political struggles as a labor union. …
