Shikinejima

Japanese: 式根島 - しきねじま
Shikinejima

A small volcanic island in the Izu Islands, Tokyo. It belongs to Niijima Village, Oshima Subprefecture. It is located about 3.7 km south of Niijima and has an area of 3.69 square kilometers. The island is a plateau made of rhyolite, with a highest point of 109 meters. The coast is a cliff, but there are many inlets such as Nobushi Port, Oura Bay, and Okama Bay, and there are sandy beaches at the inner part of the bay. Ashitsuki Onsen and Jinata Onsen are also located on the south coast. The island has a warm marine climate and naturally grows forests of camellias and nagi. It was uninhabited for a long time, but migration from Niijima began in 1889 (Meiji 22). As of 2009 (Heisei 21), 562 people are living there. The main industries are fishing and tourism (private lodgings and marine sports such as surfing, scuba diving, and water skiing), and regular ferries run between Nobushi Port and Tokyo, Shimoda, Izu Oshima, Niijima, and Kozushima. Tomari Port at the northern end is an old fishing port built in 1908 (Meiji 41), and is home to Tomari Shrine, the local shrine.
