It is a type of annual divination that predicts the fortunes of the year. It is often held on the 15th day of the first month, known as Kosho-gatsu, and is generally used to predict the harvest. A wooden stick with a split end called a kayubashi is placed in the rice porridge and stirred, and the number of rice grains that stick to the stick is used to predict the harvest of the year. Also, 12 bamboo tubes, one for each month, are placed in the rice porridge to predict the harvest, and the amount of rice porridge in each tube determines the type of crop to be planted, such as early rice, barley, soybeans, etc. It is believed that in the past this was performed jointly by villages, hamlets, groups, and neighboring houses, but it has rapidly declined in recent times. Evidence of this can be seen in shrine events such as the Kayu-uranai Shinto Ritual and Tsutsugayu Shinto Ritual.
