[Died] c. 500. Indian grammarian and philosopher. Biography unknown. Known as the author of Vākyapadīya (Composition of Sentences and Words). He elevated the grammar of Pānini, Patanjali and others to the level of linguistic philosophy. In Nankai Jiki Nei Fa Zhuan (The Internal Fa of the Southern Seas) by the Chinese monk Yijing, who visited India at the end of the 7th century, he is said to be the same person as Bhartrihari, the author of Śatakatraya (Three Hundred Poems), which has been loved in ancient India, but this is not certain.

インドの文法学者，哲学者。伝記未詳。『文章単語編』 Vākyapadīyaの著者として知られる。パーニニ，パタンジャリらの文法学を言語哲学にまで高めた。7世紀末にインドを訪れた中国僧義浄の『南海寄帰内法伝』には，古来インドで愛誦されている『百頌三集』 Śatakatrayaの著者バルトリハリと同一人物とされているが，確定的ではない。
