...Miyatojima, Toyama (117m), Ogidani, and Tamonyama (50m) are known as the four great views of Matsushima (spectacular, beautiful, mysterious, and magnificent). There are many historical sites near the coast, including Zuiganji Temple, the family temple of the Date clan, which was rebuilt in 1609 (Keicho 14) and has many national treasures and important cultural properties; Kanrantei, which was used as a place for moon-viewing by the feudal lord and was called the "Moon-viewing Palace"; Godaido, said to have been founded by Sakanoue no Tamuramaro and later rebuilt by Date Masamune; Entsuin Mausoleum; and Yotokuin Mausoleum. On Oshima (Senmatsushima), across the Togetsukyo Bridge, there is the Raiken Monument, said to be one of the three ancient monuments of Oshu, and there are many traces of carvings in the shape of a stupa on the rock face. At the back of Shiogama Bay, a branch of Matsushima Bay, sits Shiogama Shrine, the Ichinomiya of Oshu.
