1862‐1934
A conservative politician during the French Third Republic. Since 1894 he has served as Minister of Public Works and Minister of the Interior, and in 1913, as Prime Minister, he enacted the Three-Year Military Service Law. In 1922, he represented France at the Geneva Conference. In 1934, as Foreign Minister in the Doumergue Cabinet, he cooperated with the Soviet Union and worked to form an "Eastern European Locarno" in opposition to Germany, but was assassinated in Marseille in October. He had been a member of the Académie Française since 1918, and was also known as a bibliophile. [Yamagiwa Kiyoshi]

フランス第三共和政期の保守的政治家。1894年以来公共事業相，内相などを歴任，1913年には首相として三年兵役法を成立させた。22年，ジェノバ会議のフランス代表。34年にはドゥーメルグ内閣の外相としてソ連と協力し，ドイツに対抗して“東欧ロカルノ”の結成につとめたが，10月，マルセイユで暗殺された。1918年以来アカデミー･フランセーズの会員で，愛書家としても知られている。【山極潔】
