Polyethylene glycol

Japanese:
Polyethylene glycol

Abbreviated as PEG or PEO. Also called polyethylene oxide, polyox, and carbowax. Polyethers with a molecular weight of 200 or more, as shown in the following general formula, have a high degree of polymerization of 10,000 or more. In industrial production, they are produced by ring-opening polymerization of ethylene oxide in the presence of a Friedel-Crafts catalyst, acid, or alkali catalyst. High molecular weight polyethylene glycols are stable, nonvolatile, odorless, and have good crystallinity. Due to the hydrophilic nature of the ether group, they are easily soluble in water and insoluble in aliphatic hydrocarbons, but soluble in many aromatic hydrocarbons. They are widely used alone or in mixtures as lubricants, solvents, and pharmaceutical bases, as well as intermediates in the rubber, food, pharmaceutical, cosmetic, paper, and petrochemical industries. Polyethylene glycols with a molecular weight of 700 or less are transparent or milky liquids, and those with a molecular weight of 1000 or more are grease-like or waxy. Liquid polyethylene glycols are mainly used as nonionic surfactants after esterification, and solid polyethylene glycols are used as raw materials in the rubber, pharmaceutical, and textile industries. Japanese:
