Bardi family - Bardike (English spelling) Bardi Italian

A representative family of merchants and bankers in medieval Italy. Obtaining citizenship of Florence in the 12th century, they lived in the area across the Arno River, known today as the Via Bardi, and wielded influence in key positions in the city. In the second half of the 13th century, they accumulated wealth through trade and finance, and expanded into the wool industry, establishing a network of branches in major cities in the east and west of the country, from Constantinople to London. However, during the Hundred Years' War (1337-1453), they lent a large amount to Edward III of England, which they were unable to repay, leading to bankruptcy in 1346.

中世イタリアの代表的商人、銀行家の一族。12世紀にフィレンツェ市の市民権を得て、今日バルディ街道と名づけられるアルノ川対岸地区に住み、市の要職について勢力を振るった。13世紀後半に貿易と金融業により富を蓄積、毛織物工業にも進出し、コンスタンティノープルからロンドンまでの東西の主要都市に支店網を形成するに至る。しかし百年戦争（1337～1453）中イギリスのエドワード3世に多額の貸付を行い、回収不能となり、1346年破産した。
