...The late Edo period was a time of centering on sideburns, with hairstyles that made the topknot and forelocks less conspicuous. Around the An'ei period (1772-81), a new style of sideburns called binhari was invented, and lantern sideburns that protruded widely to the side became popular. Along with these flashy sideburns, topknots also became more diverse, with the Shimada topknot being styled in the Bunkin Shimada, Tsubushi Shimada, and Kirizumi Shimada styles, and the Katsuyama topknot also changing from the narrow topknot of the earlier period to a large, wide topknot. One of the reasons for this is that the number of hair stylists on the streets increased, and they competed with each other to create a variety of hairstyles. ...
