…In the early days of the Northern and Southern Dynasties, Kiryu Kunitsuna built Kiryu Castle on Hishiyakuyama, north of the city, but the area around the castle did not prosper. In the early modern period, Kiryu Shinmachi was systematically developed southward from the front of Kiryu Tenmangu Shrine, and in the early 17th century, a silk market was opened, establishing the foundations of Kiryu textiles. With the waters of the Kiryu River, which are suitable for dyeing and washing, and the surrounding sericulture and silk-reeling areas, the city became the center of the textile industry in northern Kanto, and prospered remarkably from the Meiji and Taisho periods through to the beginning of the Showa period. …
