Year of death: 22 January 1863 (11 March 1863) Year of birth: Bunka 11.10.22 (1814.12.3) A Confucian scholar and Sonnō-jōi patriot in the late Edo period. His given name was Hoji, and his university name was commonly known as Todō. Born into a merchant family in Kyoto, he studied eclectic studies under Nukina Kaiya. He became a tutor to Prince Shoren-in and Prince Chion-in. He was well acquainted with Sanjō Sanetomo, and made the most of his position as a royal clerk. From the time of Perry's arrival, he mediated the Mito domain's message to the Imperial Court to expel the barbarians, and was known as one of the four Sonnō-jōi heavenly kings along with Yanagawa Seigan, Umeda Unpin, and Yori Mikisaburo. He turned himself in during the Ansei Purge in 1858 (Ansei 5), but was only given the light punishment of banishment the following year, and was therefore considered a traitor. He changed his name to Taizō and retired to Osaka, but in 1863 (Bunkyū 3), on his way back from a drinking party hosted by Yamauchi Uchidō, the former lord of the Tosa domain, he was slain by Okada Izō. He was beheaded at Naniwabashi Bridge, and his ears were thrown into the residences of Masayoshinori Sanjo and Nakayama Tadayoshi.
