1641‐1707 Patriarch of Jerusalem, Eastern Orthodox Church, reigned 1669-1707. Greek. In order to eliminate the Calvinist influence that had infiltrated the Eastern Orthodox Church after the Reformation, he attempted to codify the doctrines of the Orthodox Church, and with the cooperation of other patriarchs at a synod in Jerusalem in 1672 (the Synod of Bethlehem), he adopted a document that would later become known as the Confession of Dositheos. This document was criticized by the Russian Orthodox Church and others for relying too heavily on Catholic theological methods and terminology to refute Protestant theology.
