A village in Agawa County, central Kochi Prefecture. Population 3,705 (1995). Located in the Kami-Yachikawa River basin, a tributary of the Niyodo River. Almost the entire village is covered by forests, making it a typical mountain village. Small areas of cultivated land are open along the Kami-Yachikawa River, which flows west in the southern part, and its tributaries, where settlements are scattered. Since ancient times, the village has actively produced Mitsumata and paper mulberry as a supplier of raw materials for papermaking to Ino, a paper manufacturing area to the south, and these were transported by boat until the Taisho period. Currently, in addition to forestry, rice cultivation, sericulture, livestock farming, and other industries are carried out, and konjac, tea, watermelon, and other crops are also cultivated. 高知県中央部,吾川郡の村。人口3705(1995)。仁淀川支流の上八川川流域に位置する。村のほぼ全域を山林が占める,典型的な山村で,南部を西流する上八川川とその支流に沿ってわずかに耕地が開け,集落が点在する。古くから南の製紙業地伊野への製紙原料の供給地としてミツマタ,コウゾを盛んに生産し,大正期までは舟で運んでいた。現在は林業のほか,米作,養蚕,畜産などが行われ,コンニャク,茶,スイカなどの栽培も加わる。
