Lycosthenes’ Chronicles Attested to as Omens (1557) explored the relationship between the birth of monsters and strange events, and Luther and Melanchthon used this in their religious debates, inventing a fictitious deformed body called the “Papal Ass” and publicizing it as a sign of the collapse of Roman Catholicism. However, with the rise of true biology, researchers began to see monsters and deformed bodies as mysterious natural phenomena, and works such as Gesner’s History of Animals (1551-58), Paré’s On Monsters and Deformities (1573), and G.
