…In the 15th and 16th centuries, in the midst of the turmoil of the Reformation in Western Europe, interest turned to the birth of deformed bodies as omens heralding the end of the world. Lycosthenes’ Chronicles Attested to as Omens (1557) explored the relationship between the birth of monsters and strange events, and Luther and Melanchthon used this in their religious debates, inventing a fictitious deformed body called the “Papal Ass” and publicizing it as a sign of the collapse of Roman Catholicism. However, with the rise of true biology, researchers began to see monsters and deformed bodies as mysterious natural phenomena, and works such as Gesner’s History of Animals (1551-58), Paré’s On Monsters and Deformities (1573), and G. Schott’s Wonders of Nature (1662) appeared. …
