A French medical scientist, he conducted a wide range of investigations that formed the basis of public health, and in particular shed light on the ill state of the city of Paris through concrete observations and data. He went to Paris at the age of 17 to study medicine, and after receiving his doctorate in 1814, spent several years as a practicing physician. However, while treating patients, he realized that the medical research findings of the time contained many errors, and in 1821, seeking a field of research that was more reliable, he began to conduct research on public health. His investigations were mainly focused on various urban facilities in Paris, including sewers, sewage dumps, toilets, horse disposal plants, dissecting rooms, rivers, and factories that were sources of pollution, and he presented the current state of facilities that could no longer support the growing population, as well as proposals for improvements.

フランスの医学者。公衆衛生学の基礎となる多様な調査を行い，とくに都市パリの病める状態を具体的な観察とデータによって明らかにした。17歳でパリに出て医学を学び，1814年に博士号を取った後，数年間を開業医として過ごした。しかし治療にあたるなかで，当時の医学の研究成果には誤りが多いことに気づき，確実性のある研究分野を求めて，21年より公衆衛生の調査研究を行うようになった。その調査対象は主としてパリの多様な都市施設で，下水道，し尿投棄場，便所，廃馬処理場，解剖室，河川，汚染源となる工場など，いずれも増大する人口を支えきれなくなった施設の実態と改善策を提出するものであった。
