[Died] February 8, 1894. Roman British novelist. Born in Scotland. At the age of 16, he went to Canada and worked for the Hudson Harbour Company. After returning to the United States and working for the publisher Constable, he began his career as a writer with Snowflakes and Sunbeams, or, The Young Fur Traders (1855), set in Canada. After that, he published a rapid succession of adventure novels for boys, becoming a popular author with over 100 works. His most famous work is Coral Island (58), which depicts the adventures of boys who are shipwrecked on a remote island in the South Seas.
