Ara is a southern constellation. It is a minor constellation south of Scorpio, and has been called "the one who offers sacrifices" since the Greek period. Alpha has a magnitude of 3.0 and a spectral type of B3, Beta has a magnitude of 2.8 and a spectral type of K1, and Gamma has a magnitude of 3.5 and a spectral type of B1. It contains open clusters NGC6208 and IC4651, and globular clusters NGC6352, NGC6362, and NGC6397. Its approximate position is 17h10m in right ascension and -55° in declination. It reaches its culmination at 8pm in early August.
