Yoshihide Otsubo

An equestrian from the Muromachi period. The founder of the Otsubo school of equestrianism. Born in Kazusa Province (Chiba Prefecture). He became a monk under the name Dozen after becoming Magosaburo. He is said to have traveled to Hitachi Province (Ibaraki Prefecture) to pray to the god Kashima, and had a spiritual dream in which he created a saddle which he named Muso Saddle. He first studied under Ogasawara Masanaga of the Ogasawara school, and eventually developed his own method of making saddles and stirrups, and founded the Otsubo school. Later, with Masanaga's recommendation, he became the equestrian instructor for Ashikaga Yoshimitsu, the shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. 室町時代の馬術家。大坪流馬術の開祖。上総国(千葉県)生まれ。孫三郎,のち入道して道禅と称す。常陸国(茨城県)に赴き鹿島大神に祈った際,その霊夢によって製作した鞍を夢想鞍と名付けたとされる。はじめ小笠原流の小笠原政長に学び,やがて独自の鞍鐙(くらとあぶみ)の製法を編み出し,大坪流を創始した。その後,政長の推挙もあり,室町幕府将軍足利義満の馬術師範となった。その功績は総合武術であった小笠原流から馬術を独立させ,実子村上永幸をはじめ多くの馬術専門家を養成したことであろう。<参考文献>日夏繁高『本朝武芸小伝』(新編武術叢書),石岡久夫『日本の古武術』
