Para Red - Para Red (English spelling)

A method developed in 1880 for dyeing cotton. Cotton is soaked in an alkaline solution of 2-naphthol, which is then coupled with diazotized p-nitroaniline to produce a red, insoluble azo dye on the fiber. This method is no longer used because 2-naphthol has the disadvantage of not being substantive to cotton. Instead, 2-hydroxy-3-naphthoic acid anilide (Naphthol AS series), which has substantivity to cotton, has been invented.

木綿を染色するために、1880年に開発された手法。2-ナフトールのアルカリ溶液を木綿にしみ込ませたのち、ジアゾ化したp(パラ)-ニトロアニリンとカップリングさせれば、繊維上で赤色の不溶性アゾ色素が生成する。この手法は、2-ナフトールが木綿に直接性をもたない欠点があるため、現在では用いられていない。このかわりに、木綿に直接性をもつ2-ヒドロキシ-3-ナフトエ酸アニリド（ナフトールAS類）が発明された。
