...It is believed that cattle were introduced to Japan from the continent in the late Jomon culture, but there are almost no traces of cattle meat being eaten from then until the Yayoi culture. In the Kofun period, there are records in the Kojiki and Nihon Shoki that suggest that beef was eaten, and the Kogo Shūi contains a passage that in the Age of the Gods, on the day that the landlord (Ōtokonushi) god made rice fields, beef was given to those who worked in the fields. These records of beef consumption seem to indicate the food culture brought with them by the many immigrants who came to Japan from the continent after the 4th century. ...
