Iwagikyo - Iwagikyo

Japanese: イワギキョウ - いわぎきょう
Iwagikyo - Iwagikyo

A perennial plant of the Campanulaceae family (APG classification: Campanulaceae). The basal leaves are obovate-lanceolate with sharp sawtooth and a winged stalk at the base. The flower stalk is 5-12 cm tall and has several small, alternate, obovate, stalkless leaves. In August, a single bright purple flower opens sideways at the end of the flower stalk. The corolla is broad-bell-shaped with five lobes and no hairs. The calyx is coarsely hairy and has five lobes, the lobes are linear with a few sawtooths and open out. The fruit is a capsule that opens upwards. It grows in rock crevices and gravel areas in the alpine zone of Honshu from the Chubu region northwards and Hokkaido, and is distributed in the Kuril Islands, Sakhalin, Aleutian Islands, Kamchatka, and Alaska. The name comes from the fact that it grows on rocky areas and its flowers resemble bellflowers. The closely related Chishima bellflower has hairs on the inside of the corolla and low, wavy sawtooth leaves. Its distribution area is also almost the same.
