Sentoku

A haiku poet of the mid-Edo period. Mizuma, who went by the pen name Gokando, was born in Edo and died there at the age of 65. He was first seen in 1678 (Enpo 6) at the age of 18 when he was included in Edo Shindo, edited by Gonsui, under the pen name Senyo. He was favored by the father and son Naito Fuko and Rosen, but after Fuko's death in 1685 (Jokyo 2), he became close to Kikaku, learned witty haiku, and became a central figure in the Edo haiku world during the Kyoho period (1716-1736). There is a famous story about Basho's request for a review of two haiku poems about the cuckoo, which led to Zentoku becoming the "Professor of Determination of Matter" (Basho's Letter to Keiko). Zentoku's first collection of poems was "Hairin Ichiji Yuranshu" published in 1692 (Genroku 5). He also compiled and wrote "Fumiyomogi", "Yokasenku", "Hashiminami", and "Nochiyokasenku". "Zentoku Essays", published in 1718 (Kyoho 3), is an essential resource for understanding his view of haiku. One of his disciples was Senshu.

江戸中期の俳人。水間(みずま)氏。合歓堂(ごうかんどう)と号す。江戸で生まれ、同地に没。享年65歳。1678年（延宝6）18歳のおりの沾葉(せんよう)号での言水(ごんすい)編『江戸新道』入集が初見。内藤風虎(ふうこ)・露沾(ろせん)父子の寵愛(ちょうあい)を受けるが、1685年（貞享2）風虎没後、其角(きかく)に親炙(しんしゃ)し、洒落(しゃれ)風の俳諧(はいかい)を習得、享保(きょうほう)期（1716～36）江戸俳壇の中心的人物となる。沾徳が、芭蕉(ばしょう)から時鳥(ほととぎす)二句の評を請われ「物定(さだめ)のはかせ」となったエピソード（荊口宛(けいこうあて)芭蕉書簡）は有名である。1692年（元禄5）刊の『誹林一字幽蘭集(はいりんいちじゆうらんしゅう)』が処女撰集(せんしゅう)。ほかに『文蓬莱(ふみよもぎ)』『余花千句(よかせんく)』『橋南(はしみなみ)』『後余花千句(のちよかせんく)』などの編著がある。1718年（享保3）成立の『沾徳随筆』は、彼の俳諧観をうかがうのに欠かせない資料である。門人に沾洲(せんしゅう)がいる。
