The first Japanese athlete to participate in the Olympics. Born in Tokyo. Graduated from Gakushuin and Tokyo Imperial University. He was known as an all-round athlete from his student days. He was particularly good at short distances in track and field, and in 1912 (Meiji 45), he became the first Japanese to participate in the Olympics at the 5th Olympic Games in Stockholm, along with marathon runner Shiso Kanakuri. They competed in the 100, 200 and 400 meters, but only made it past the qualifying rounds in each. Not knowing that there would be a placard at the entrance ceremony, the two of them discussed it and marched in with the country's name as NIPPON. This was the only time NIPPON was used, and it has since been changed to JAPAN. He was a scholarly man with a beard, which he carefully groomed, even in Stockholm.
