Parathion - Parachion (English spelling)

The international standard name for the chemical name O,O-diethyl-Op-nitrophenylthiophosphate. Invented in Germany in 1944, it was imported to Japan under the brand name Holidol, and used nationwide from 1952 (Showa 27) due to its outstanding effectiveness in controlling the rice stem borer and other insects. It was domestically produced by Sumitomo Chemical Co., Ltd. (now Sumitomo Chemical) in 1958, and many agrochemical companies purchased the raw material and sold it as a formulation. It was extremely useful in promoting agriculture (increasing food production), but due to the high incidence of poisonings, its use was banned in Japan in 1971.

化学名O,O-diethyl-O-p-nitrophenylthiophosphateの国際的標準名。1944年にドイツで発明され、日本へはホリドールHolidolの商標名で輸入され、1952年（昭和27）からイネのニカメイガなどの防除に卓効があるので全国的に使われた。1958年から住友化学工業（現、住友化学）によって国産化され、多くの農薬会社が原薬を購入して製剤として発売した。農業の振興（食糧増産）に非常に役だったが、中毒者などの多発により、1971年から日本では使用が禁止された。
