Palaung people - Palaung (English spelling)

A general term for the hill tribes living in the Shan Plateau of Myanmar. Palaung is the Burmese name for them, and they call themselves Ta-ang. They include the Katul, Khunloi, Kanhai, Manloi, Lumai, Taungma, and Taang ethnic groups. They also live in parts of Yunnan, China, with a total population estimated at more than 250,000. Their language belongs to the Mon-Khmer family. They were known for cultivating tea. In some areas they have a patrilineal family system similar to that of the Kachin people to the north, but in other areas their customs are similar to those of the general Shan people. Shan-style Buddhism coexists with local rituals based on ancestor worship, and although they are linguistically similar to the Wa people who live to the east, they are very different culturally.
