Japanese: 佐野[市] - さの
Sano [city] - Sano
It is located in the southwest of Tochigi Prefecture, on the north bank of the Watarase River, and occupies the southern foot of the Ashio Mountains. It was incorporated as a city in 1943. It borders Ashikaga City to the east, and the Watarase River is the border with Tatebayashi City in Gunma Prefecture. The city center was called Tenmyo-juku during the Edo period, and flourished as a post town on the Nikko Reibeishi Kaido road. It is now a transportation hub where the Ryomo Line and the Tobu Sano Line intersect. The Tohoku Expressway and the Kita-Kanto Expressway pass through the city. Inubuse in the northeast was also a former post town. It has long been famous as a production area for castings such as Tenmei kettles, and crepe paper, and traditional industries such as dolls, carp streamers, tiles, and lacquerware are also carried out. After World War II, the sewing industry developed rapidly, and now large factories for women's and children's clothing, precision machinery, plastics, transportation machinery, etc. have moved into the city. The northern Kuzu area has limestone layers (Nabeyama Formation), where limestone and dolomite are mined, and there are large cement and dolomite factories. It is also home to Sano Yakuyoke Daishi, one of the three great temples in the Kanto region. In February 2005, Tanuma Town and Kuzu Town in Aso County were incorporated. The city suffered damage in the Great East Japan Earthquake. 356.04 km2 . 121,249 people (2010).
