The simplest armor of the Middle Ages, worn only on the chest and abdomen. It was mainly worn by junior soldiers and was also worn under formal attire. Its existence has been known since the Kamakura period, and in the entry on the Battle of Kinugasa in the Genpei Seisuiki, it is written that "those who were good archers wore helmets, belly warmers, belly guards, and tsutsumaru armor," and its shape can be seen in the Raigoji Temple's Ten Worlds Map. There are very few surviving examples, and the most famous is a red-laced belly guard that was bestowed by Ashikaga Yoshinori to the Matsuura family. It consists of two tiers of standing armor on the chest board, a long side body part slightly hanging on both sides, and a small grass skirt. It is a simple piece with long leather cords coming out from both ends of the long side to make shoulder straps (watagami) and combined with the high strings on the chest board.
