《Katarsarit Sagara》

...The original of the Panchatantra, a collection of five moral stories, was lost, but was passed down through several variants, and after the 6th century it was translated into Syriac, Arabic, and other languages, and was widely distributed in Eastern and Western countries under the names of Kalila and Dimna or the Tale of Pirpai, and has had a great influence on narrative literature in countries around the world. The original of the great collection of stories by Gunadiya, Brihat Katha, which is said to consist of 100,000 verses and was written in the Paishachi language, has also been lost, but several abridgements have been passed down, and Somadeva's Katasaritsagara is the most famous. These collections of stories are in the form of a single frame story that contains many episodes, and small collections of stories of interest were also created based on this format, such as the Betarapanchavinshatika (25 Tales of the Dead Ghost) and the Shukasaptati (70 Tales of the Parrot).

From [Narrative Literature]

…The great Gunadiya collection of tales, the Brihat-Katha, was written in a kind of Prakrit called Paisāci, and was said to be a monumental work of 100,000 verses, but it was lost and has been passed down. Several versions have been later adapted in Sanskrit or Prakrit. The most famous of these adaptations is the Kathāsaritsāgara (12th century) by Somadeva, written in Sanskrit verse and containing 350 interesting stories. The circulation of these great collections of tales encouraged the popularity of narrative literature, and many smaller collections of tales for entertainment and popular use were created. …

[From Brihat Kathar]

...It is said to have been composed of 100,000 verses and written in the slang language Paisācī, and was a collection of tales based on the marriage of King Udayana of the Vatsa Kingdom and the adventures of the prince Narabhanadatta. The original has been lost and no longer exists, but several Sanskrit abridged versions have been handed down. The most famous of these is the Kathāsaritsāgara by Somadeva (11th century), which consists of 18 volumes of beautiful Sanskrit verse with 21,388 verses and contains 350 interesting stories. The Jain Saṅgadāsagaṇin's Vasudevahiṇḍi, written in the Prakrit language (colloquial) Maharashtri, is considered to be a Jainized version of the Brihat-Katha, and is considered to play a major role in exploring its original form.
