After a valley has reached a certain stage in its erosive cycle, rejuvenation or regeneration of the valley occurs when downward erosion increases due to ground movement, climate change, or other factors.

…The alternation of hard sandstone layers and soft shale layers according to the fold structure controls the distribution of rocks, and then as a result of the uplift of the entire region and the accompanying erosion, the rock layers that are more resistant to erosion become mountain ridges and the rock layers that are less resistant become valleys, and ultimately the topography is governed by the pattern of the fold structure.
