A powerful kingdom that flourished in East Africa in the 19th century. It was located on the northern shore of Lake Victoria in south-central Uganda. It was one of the small countries founded by Bantu-speaking peoples in the area of present-day Uganda. It was established by a Ganda king (Kabaka) with a strong centralized authority at the end of the 14th century, and in the 19th century, it developed into the largest and most powerful kingdom in the region, with Mengo near Kampala as its base. During the reign of Mutesa I (reigned 1856-84), foreign influences, including religious ones, began to spread, and after his death, domestic forces were divided into religious and religious factions. In 1894, it came under British influence, and in 1900, the Buganda Agreement officially made it a British protectorate. After Uganda's independence in 1962, it was granted considerable autonomy and a special status as a federal state. However, in 1966, a conflict arose between Mutesa II, who demanded political separation from Uganda, and Ugandan Prime Minister Milton Obote, and in 1967 Obote abolished the kingdom along with three other kingdoms. In 1993, Ronald Mutebi was crowned Kabaka on the condition that he would not become involved in politics, and the kingdom was restored. In 2001, the Tombs of the Kings of Buganda in Kasubi were registered as a World Heritage Site.
