A former town in Aira County, central Kagoshima Prefecture. Said to be the center of the ancient Hayato tribe, it is full of legends and historical sites. Along with Kokubu City (now Kirishima City), it is in the center of the Kokubu Plain and produces rice, tomatoes, peaches, mandarin oranges, etc., but recently the number of people commuting to Kagoshima City has increased. It is home to Kagoshima Shrine and Hayato Onsen. The Nippō Main Line runs through the town, and the Hisatsu Line branches off here. 鹿児島県中部,姶良(あいら)郡の旧町。古代の隼人族の中心地といわれ伝説や史跡が多い。国分市(現・霧島市)とともに国分平野の中心で,米,トマト,モモ,ミカンなどを産するが,最近は鹿児島市への通勤者が増加。鹿児島神宮,隼人温泉がある。日豊本線が通じ肥薩(ひさつ)線が分岐。2005年11月,国分市,姶良郡溝辺町,横川町,牧園町,霧島町,福山町と合併し市制,霧島市となる。66.49km2。3万6264人(2003)。
