…Chinese military and politician. Born in Xiangcheng County, Henan Province. His courtesy name was Yiting (梁椭) and his pen name was Rong'an. He grew up in a large landowning family, and after failing the imperial examinations several times, he joined the military. His grandfather had produced a general in the Huai Army (Yuan Jia San), and he suppressed the Gapsin Coup in Korea, winning the support of Li Hongzhang. After losing the Sino-Japanese War, the Qing Dynasty decided to adopt a modern military system. Yuan Shikai, who was appointed to oversee the new army, promoted young officers he had close ties with, including his sworn brother Xu Shichang, to head various departments, building a powerful personal network. …
