Ethylene glycol

C ₂ H ₆ O ₂ (62.07). HOCH ₂ CH ₂ OH. Also called 1,2-ethanediol. The simplest of the glycols. In the laboratory, 1,2-dibromoethane is hydrolyzed with a base. In industry, it is produced by hydrating ethylene oxide in the presence of a large excess of water without a catalyst. It is a colorless, viscous liquid with a sweet taste. Melting point -13.0 °C, boiling point 197.6 °C. 1.1088. 1.43178. Easily soluble in water, ethanol, and acetone, sparingly soluble in ether and benzene. Due to the presence of two hydroxyl groups, it is mainly used in the manufacture of polyester fibers and resins. Other uses include dynamite, cellophane, and antifreeze. [CAS 107-21-1]
