...Population: 401,000 (1995). Located downstream of the Avon River, which flows into the Bristol Channel, at the confluence with the Flume River, it is a key transportation hub with the international port of Avonmouth at the mouth of the Avon River and a railway linking England and Wales, and industries such as aircraft, nuclear power, tobacco, flour milling, and printing have developed. A Saxon settlement was established in the 10th century, but by the time of the Norman Conquest a castle had already been built and it had become a trading center. In 1155, Henry II issued the city its first charter, and in 1373 it became an independent county.
