de Mairan (English spelling)

...Small birds sing in the morning, and mice are active at night. The French astronomer de Mairan was the first to experimentally show (1729) that the circadian rhythm of living things is not the result of the direct effects of external light or temperature, but is based on endogenous rhythms inherent in the living thing. He discovered that the movement of plant leaves continues even in the dark.
