Mayon [mountain] - Mayon

Japanese: マヨン[山] - マヨン

An active volcano in the Bicol Peninsula in the southeastern part of Luzon, Philippines. It is 2,421 meters above sea level. It is a typical stratovolcano. It is made of pyroxene andesite, and has frequently erupted violently, causing great damage to the surrounding area. In 1897, lava flows reached the coast 10 km from the crater. During eruptions, roads at the foot of the mountain can sometimes be buried in eruption material. In 1938, the surrounding area was designated a national park. In recent years, it erupted in 1993, killing 100 people.
