A fiber obtained by spinning long-chain synthetic polymers that mainly contain polyester, a polymer with ester bonds (-CO-O-). Generally, it is made by melt-spinning polyethylene terephthalate, a polycondensation product of terephthalic acid and ethylene glycol. It was developed in the UK in 1941, and is industrialized by ICI in the UK under the brand name Terylene, manufactured and sold by DuPont in the US under the brand name Dacron, and in Japan under the brand name Tetoron. It has high tensile strength and good heat and light resistance. It has good electrical insulation, acid resistance, insect resistance, and wrinkle resistance, and is used in a wide range of applications, such as suits and shirts for clothing, curtains and umbrellas for home use, and fire hoses and fishing nets for industrial use. In particular, injection-molded products are used as various engineering plastics. The production volume of polyester fiber increased with the increase in demand, and in 1970 it surpassed nylon to become the largest producer of polyester fiber.

エステル結合 (-CO-O-) をもつ重合体ポリエステルを主として含む長鎖状合成高分子を紡系して得られる繊維。一般に，テレフタル酸とエチレングリコールの重縮合体であるポリエチレンテレフタレートを溶融紡糸したもの。 1941年イギリスで開発され，イギリスの ICI社はテリレンの商品名で工業化，アメリカのデュポン社ではダクロンの商品名，日本ではテトロンの商品名で製造，販売している。引張り強度が大きく，耐熱性，耐光性が良好。電気絶縁性，耐酸性，防虫性もよく，耐皺性もあり，衣料用として背広，ワイシャツ，家庭用にカーテン，洋傘，産業用に消火用ホース，漁網など広い用途をもち，特に射出成形品は各種のエンジニアリングプラスチックとして利用されている。ポリエステル繊維の生産量は需要増大とともに伸び，70年にはナイロンを抜いて第1位を占めるにいたった。
