A city in southwest Taiwan. Located 50km north of Kaohsiung. Population 734,650 (2000). Formerly called Chihkan, commonly known as Fucheng. Taiwan's oldest city and historical town. Han Chinese from the mainland immigrated here from around the 16th century, and in the early 17th century, the Dutch built Provincial Fort (Chihkan Tower) here, which stood opposite Fort Zeelandia in Anping and became their base for Taiwanese rule. In 1661, Zheng Chenggong, a Ming dynasty retainer, drove out the Dutch and used this place as a base for overthrowing the Qing and restoring the Ming. In 1684, the Qing dynasty defeated Zheng's army and incorporated Taiwan into its territory. Taiwan County was established here, and it became the political center of Taiwan for over 200 years. After the provincial capital was moved to Taipei in 1885, the county was renamed Anping County in 1887, and Tainan City was established in that urban area in 1945. There are many historical sites within the city, such as the Chihkan and Anping Old Forts, the Koxinga Temple, and the Confucius Temple. It is a traditional producer of rice, sugar cane, sweet potatoes, and beans. The sugar industry developed early on, and fish farming using the coast is also thriving. In recent years, factories have sprung up in the surrounding area, and there has been remarkable development in the spinning, paper, and food processing industries.
