A village in Shimotakai District, northeastern Nagano Prefecture. Population 4,828 (1995). It is located on the southern bank of the downstream Chikuma River, at the northern foot of Mount Kenashi (1,650m), with the Okushiga forest road running along its eastern side. Nozawa, in the center of the village, is home to Nozawa Onsen (simple hydrogen sulfide spring, 42-92°C), which is said to have been discovered by Gyoki, and has developed as a hot spring resort. Within the village there are 12 public baths managed by the bathing community, including Oyu, Kumatearaiyu, and Akayu, and a hot spring field called Ogama. 長野県北東部,下高井郡の村。人口4828(1995)。千曲川下流南岸,毛無山(1650m)の北麓に位置し,その東側を奥志賀林道が縦断する。中心の野沢には行基によって発見されたと伝える野沢温泉(単純硫化水素泉,42~92℃)があり,湯治場として発達した。集落内には,大湯,熊の手洗湯,赤湯など湯仲間によって管理された12の共同浴場があり,麻釜(おがま)と呼ばれる湯畑もある。また,近代的な入浴法の指導などを行うクアハウスもある。
