An industrial city in northern Alabama, United States. Population: 242,820 (2000). Metropolitan population: 921,106 (2000). Located in the Johns River Valley at the southern end of the Appalachian Mountains, it is the largest city in the state and the center of the steel industry in the southern United States. Iron ore, limestone, and coal necessary for steelmaking are produced nearby, which led to the development of the steel and metal processing industries. In addition, transportation equipment, construction materials, and chemical products are produced in the city. Commercial, financial, insurance, and research institutes are also active, and it is the economic center of northern Alabama. Founded in 1871 as a steel town, it has grown with the development of steel and the railroad network. Since then, local iron ore mining has decreased, and most iron ore is imported from South America and transported by canal from the Gulf of Mexico. It is also a cultural city, home to the University of Alabama School of Medicine, Samford University, a symphony orchestra, museums, an opera house, and a botanical garden with a Japanese garden.
